Building a Sacred Community

Our worship at St John’s is centred around the Eucharist, or Holy Communion. In obedience to Jesus’ command to ‘Do this in remembrance of me’, we break bread and share wine, trusting that through this action Christ is present with us. In this service we are also fed through the words of Holy Scripture, and a short sermon is preached to help us relate its wisdom to our lives.

The services encourage us to offer our best to God and point to the beauty of God. The priest will wear special vestments and there will be the singing of hymns as we praise God together. Silence is also an important part of our worship, as we seek to listen to God and reflect on the love and forgiveness of God revealed to us through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

There are other special services throughout the year, including Holy Week (the week before Easter as we follow Jesus to his crucifixion), Nine Lessons and Carols, and a very popular Crib Service in which our youngsters dress up as characters from the Christmas story. In November our focus is on remembering. At All Souls’ we have services to remember those who have died in the past twelve months. Then on Remembrance Sunday the community and uniformed organizations gather to remember those who died in conflict.
